THE FINISH LINE

Three things to remember about this chapter:

1. Your running gets better and smoother when you don’t try to force it too much. There are days for hard running, but many more days for easy running. The body is like a battery that needs to be recharged from time to time. When you take easy days or days off, your body rebounds and gets stronger. And then your next workout is easier than you ever imagined it could be.

2. A runner needs more than just strong legs and a strong heart. All the muscles of your body contribute to your running, some more than others. Your core muscles of the abdomen and hips are particularly important. When you make them stronger, you become a smoother, more injury-resistant runner.

3. You can go farther by going slower. If you seem to hit a wall in your attempts to build mileage, don’t get angry and frustrated. Simply slow down and start over. Once you find the right pace, your body will feel better and go farther. When you run too fast, you create a failure environment rather than the success environment you want.
